THIS BEING HUMAN IS A GUEST HOUSE.
EVERY MORNING A NEW ARRIVAL.
A JOY, A DEPRESSION, A MEANNESS,
SOME MOMENTARY AWARENESS COMES
AS AN UNEXPECTED VISITOR.
WELCOME AND ENTERTAIN THEM ALL!
EVEN IF THEY ARE A CROWD OF SORROWS,
WHO VIOLENTLY SWEEP YOUR HOUSE
EMPTY OF ITS FURNITURE,
STILL, TREAT EACH GUEST HONORABLY.
HE MAY BE CLEARING YOU OUT
FOR SOME NEW DELIGHT.
THE DARK THOUGHT, THE SHAME, THE MALICE.
MEET THEM AT THE DOOR LAUGHING AND INVITE THEM IN.
BE GRATEFUL FOR WHATEVER COMES
BECAUSE EACH HAS BEEN SENT
AS A GUIDE FROM BEYOND.

ReplyDeleteBeautifully wise words. penny
ReplyDeleteRumi is wise. Difficult to live that thought in the moment sometimes, but oh the wisdom of it...
ReplyDeleteI like this.
ReplyDeleteHello,
ReplyDeleteAmazing quote, so full of practical wisdom.
Sometimes we are elated at the arrival of these guests and sometimes we are depressed. The right thing to do, as advised by this quote, is to accept each of them gratefully.
Life will be dull and uninteresting without these guests.
Wish you all the best,
Joseph
I have copied this. I love Rumi and had never seen this poem.
ReplyDeleteThank you.
