SOME RED, SOME WHITE...

AND I'M NOT BLUE! Nope...not feeling blue today. But, I am having difficulty adjusting to my new medication for my "missing" thyroid gland. It is playing havoc with my blood sugar levels so I am constantly checking them to make sure they are not going too high. Yesterday, it was awful. I have never been so tired in my entire life I don't think. And, it was mostly attributed to high blood sugar levels. This diabetes is for the birds. Even birds would be mad because they had to eat more protein and less grains. At least strawberries have a lot of fiber!! That is a GOOD thing.

So, I stocked up on blueberries, strawberries, apricots, pluots, peaches, and nectarines. I will be trying to eat more fruit and vegetables instead of sugary treats that I crave. Thank goodness for all the summer fruit.

I'm also getting excited because we are thinking about getting a new dog! We might go and look at him next Wednesday and if his owners approve, we just might be bringing home a 14-month old cream colored Standard poodle. They gave him a crazy name though: Scruffy. Now, how can a dog hold his head up high and not have low self-esteem with a name like Scruffy? Already, when you say it, it conjures up thoughts about his hair being messy or dirty or unkempt. Does anyone have any tips for changing a dog's name? Can it be done easily so that he will accept the new name or is it too late? And, are there any suggestions for the new name? I'm thinking maybe Buffy or Buddy because it sounds similar to Scruffy but not so sure. I like the idea of him being our "traveling Buddy", our "best Buddy", our "walking Buddy". Even our "Buddy Boy"!

Have a safe 4th of July out there. Let's all pray that there are no fires started due to carelessness. And, let's all remember what we're celebrating in this Land of the Free.

  1. Standard Poodles are wonderful. I hope it works out. How fun. I agree with you about the name. I have adopted many dogs in my life and changed names very easily. It will be a cinch with a 14 month old. Buddy certainly is easy because half the time people call their dogs Buddy anyway. Buffy makes me think of the Vampire Slayer! I say name him whatever feels right, don't worry about it sounding like Scruffy. Just use the new name a lot with lots of positive reinforcement and he will forget he was ever a Scruffy in no time flat (and thank you for it too!). Happy 4th!

  2. Bethany--Thanks for the words of advice about the name. We are still awaiting more pictures and a definite day and time to meet him. The breeder said that she will meet us first before we even meet the dog. Is that normal? Should I be worried about "not making the grade"? Hmmmm.....I am excited about the change.

  3. Hey Teri, I'm more of a dog adopter. So many dogs, all shapes sizes and ages in shelters needing homes. But that breeder sounds excellent if she is insisting on meeting you first. Too many breeders are just in it for the money and don't care who their pups go to or what happens to them. This is why you cannot trust pet stores, no reputable breeder would sell her pups to pet stores. All petstore pups basically come from puppymills. So that in itself is the sign of an excellent breeder, other signs are that she insists you spay/neuter the dog, has taken pups to the vet, has some kind of return policy.Wants your kids to interact with the pup first. Will allow you to meet the parents, only breeds that one kind of dog, and her parent dogs are family, living in the house with them, not in cages or in kennels. Good luck, sounds like you're on the right track. I am sure you will make the grade. They mostly just want to know that you know something about the particular breed, can afford grooming, vet bills, and will treat your dog like a family member. Really, her asking to meet you guys first is really an excellent sign. She really cares about her dogs.
