MERRY CHRISTMAS TO US!!

Meet Rudy! We rescued Rudy today and I don't think that we could have given ourselves a better Christmas present than to save the life of some sweet, adorable dog. He was on the schedule "kill list" in San Diego and a wonderful woman named Laura who has a rescue operation saved him (and many more puppies too.)

Rudy was a little dirty and smelly but he slept on our laps the entire way home and hasn't been a problem yet. He only weighs 10 lbs. and is full-grown. We brought him home and bathed and brushed him and he is scheduled to be groomed professionally on Tuesday. As I type this, he has made himself comfortable in Bodhi's crate. Perhaps they will have a slumber party there tonight waiting for Santa. After all...Rudolph is already here waiting for Santa.

I named him Rudy for a couple of reasons. One was the most obvious: Rudolph because we got him on Christmas Eve. But the name Rudolph was also my grandfather's name so it means something special to me. Old R.C. would have approved I'm sure. I never referred to my grandfather as Rudy or R.C. or even Rudolph. To me he was Pop. Pop was a strict German descendant and a painting contractor by trade. The incredible thing is that I have just connected with one of my relatives (whom I have never met) who lives in Germany, named Gerhard. Gerhard has forwarded me genealogy papers for my family (along with photos) that go all the way back to the 1400's. I can't wait to delve into it further with him. I'm happy he can speak English...my German is really rusty.

So, from all of us here on the west coast in the Sierra Nevada Foothills of California, we wish you all a joyous and happy Christmas filled with family and friends. I'm sorry but I have un-hitched Rudy from the sleigh and he is staying right here with us!!!

  1. Merry Christmas to you and your new puppy! I used to beg my parents for a puppy every year so it's like a dream come true.

  5. You got yourself a real sweetie there. He's just adorable. What a wonderful gift. My sister was hoping for a rescue for Christmas...but it wasn't to be. She's still searching, and is having a difficult time getting approval because she works a full day. She has always had dog walkers for the dog she has now...so I don't understand why they are giving her such a hard time. Her dog Jake is getting older and would love a companion...he's so friendly with other dogs and children...this should be what the rescue people should be taking a look at...but no...they choose her working long hours as a sign it wouldn't be a good home. I think most people work...and they have pets. If the rescue folks could only see the love I see my sister give her dog...he's her whole life...she lives for her dog. I never imagined it could be so hard to adopt a pet.
You're very fortunate to have gotten Rudy...and I know that pooch is going to get all the love in the world from you. Best wishes with the new pooch. xo

  7. Bodhi is getting along great with Rudy. They slept together last night in Bodhi's crate and we didn't hear a sound. And we slept in late this AM too! "Mini-me" lays around on the couch, legs up in the air and just enjoying his new home. I think it is finally settling in that he doesn't have to go someplace...AGAIN! Can you imagine that he went to the pound, was on the "list" to be put down, got rescued, and then he had to travel all the way up from San Diego in a rain storm to get to us. He must have wondered what was going on and will he ever find his "forever" home. He has it now! I'll take photos after his professional grooming and let you all see how he looks. It is a shame, Karen, that they make such judgement calls about adoptions. Sometimes I think you just have to "fudge" and tell them what they want to hear because going to a loving home is way better than being in a kennel outside waiting to be adopted. So many out there that want to give love...why discriminate against someone who works!!!

  8. That's a really heart-warming Christmas post. I felt a tinge of sadness every time I looked at my old boy on Christmas Day. He's fast losing his enthusiasm for life. We've had 9 happy years since I rescued him and I hope you and your cute treasure have many more. He really is cute!

  10. Oh, how adorable! I've always wanted a "white fluffy" but hubby can't go past a Pug! What a lucky little pooch to be rescued by someone who will love him to bits!
