RECENT WORK DAY SCENES

"WHAT I SEE IN NATURE IS A MAGNIFICENT STRUCTURE THAT WE CAN COMPREHEND ONLY VERY IMPERFECTLY, AND THAT MUST FILL A THINKING PERSON WITH A FEELING OF HUMILITY. THIS IS A GENUINELY RELIGIOUS FEELING THAT HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH MYSTICISM."
---Albert Einstein

This is the first time I have ever seen Donner Lake shrouded in a layer of clouds. It made me pull over at the first spot and snap a picture.

Can you imagine the effort that went into making this bridge on sheer granite cliffs? The train runs through the Sierras at this point

and goes through these snow sheds at this point. All of this is sitting right over Donner Lake. Imagine what it is like covered in snow and how the Donner party must have felt when they first encountered it that fateful winter.

  1. I often think of that poor Donner party and how desperate and discouraged they must have felt. Gorgeous part of the country, your neck of the woods.

  3. Willow--I can't even imagine having to live through a winter in that place! I do not like to be there in the winter when it is snowing (Brian) so, no, probably not. The highway driving down past Donner Lake towards Lake Tahoe and Truckee is so steep and icy in the winter that I panic every time I have to go that way. That is why winter is probably one of my least favorite seasons. I am looking forward to Fall however!

  4. What a wonderful place you work in...best office view I've ever seen. Working here could do a soul wonders I suppose...are they hiring? (giggles)
Happy you get to experience this every day. And even happier that you are thoughtful to share this with us.
    Much gratitude....

  6. Lovely country and yes, what a feat, making that bridge! You're lucky you have a job that takes you to such areas.

  7. Yes, a great place to work, Katherine. I count my blessings each day but will have to think about going back next year because I miss being at home and what I have here. No matter how hard I try, I still think of other places and things that I would rather be doing than working! There is no money in the world that can match what solace I find at home gardening, sewing, writing, reading, thinking. I guess some people like to kid themselves into believing that they enjoy their work. I say: if you can retire early, do it! So, Maggie: come out here and I will train you to take over for me. I'm afraid you couldn't survive on the wages though. You could have free room and board here though. Maybe I could handle part-time.
